HOUSTON --A Pearland woman says an attempt to bake ribs ended with a blast and Chinese take-out.
Linda Clifton said she and her husband, Richard, were in the mood for a home-cooked meal Saturday. She used what she describes as a 9x13, $10 Anchor Hocking glass dish for the first time.
Clifton said she thawed and marinated the ribs, then put them in the oven and let them bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
“We were sitting in the living room and we heard this big kaboom,†said Clifton.
“The sound was more like a .45 caliber gunshot,†said Richard Clifton.
Clifton says the door to the oven popped open about six inches. The glass dish shattered and they found pieces all over the oven and in their kitchen.
The couple believes the public needs to be warned about the product.
“What would have happened if I would have come in here and my wife would have opened that oven up and it would have hit her in the face? It would have been horrific,†Richard Clifton said.
With a quick search of the Internet, we found other complaints against Anchor Hocking products. Other people have reported problems during temperature changes, like when removing the glassware from the oven.
In a statement to 11 News, a spokesperson said the company is deeply concerned about the safety of individuals while using any product.
“When used correctly, our tempered- glass bakeware is the best in the industry for performance and reliability,†said Barbara Wolf, Senior Manager, Marketing Communications, Anchor Hocking.
According to the statement, the vast majority of injuries result from failure to use the product according to instructions.
“We encourage all of our consumers to review the product’s care and instructions before and after the purchase,†wrote Wolf.
Linda Clifton and her husband don’t believe they caused the product to shatter.
“You’re never going to get me believe any different, that we did anything wrong with their product. We put it in the oven and it exploded,†said Richard Clifton.
The Cliftons are out of money for the dish and now they are going to replace their oven. The couple is afraid pieces of glass from the bakeware may still be in the oven.
The couple said going public with their experience isn’t about getting reimbursed, but rather preventing what happened to them from happening to another family.
